1700 Arlington Avenue in 1918

Image by UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
In March of 1918, James Kennedy Dunlap and his wife, Nellie (Hayes), lived at 1700 Arlington Avenue. Nellie was active in the Arlington Red Cross Unit, which was formed August 19, 1918. Ladies of Upper Arlington were encouraged to join, and the group assembled weekly to contribute to the war effort, sewing hospital clothes, pillow cases, and towels. Mr. Dunlap was one of the participating residents in the War Gardens, producing crops of potatoes, corn, and beans. J. K. Dunlap’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Helen W. Hayes, also resided with the couple at 1700 Arlington Avenue. The Dunlaps eventually moved to Dayton, Ohio, where Mr. Dunlap had accepted a position with a brokerage firm. The George S. Hershey family moved into the house at 1700 Arlington Avenue after the Dunlap family vacated the residence.

1802 Coventry Road in 1918

Image by UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
The home of Joseph Frederick Barker was located at 1802 Coventry Road near Cambridge Boulevard. The residence was featured in the January 1918 issue of the Norwester magazine. Mr. Barker graduated from Ohio State in 1908, with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He became a professor of Agricultural Chemistry and Soils at Ohio State in 1916. Mr. Barker was elected to the Upper Arlington School Board in 1922. His wife, Sophie (Hargis) Barker, was a contributor to the Norwester magazine and an active member of the community. The Barkers had two children, Josephine June and Joseph Clinton.
In 1919 the Willard S. Crater family moved into the home at 1802 Coventry Road. Mr. Crater was employed by the Bell Telephone Company for many years. During the adoption of the Village Charter in March of 1919, Crater was elected as a member of the Upper Arlington Charter Commission and was integral to the framing of the document. In addition to his civic responsibilities, Mr. Crater enjoyed gardening and playing baseball. Mr. Crater was married to the former Rilla Lue Warner, and they had one child, Willard S. Crater, Jr.

View of Jerusalem from Mount of Olives

Image by Oregon State University Archives
Image Title: View of Jerusalem from Mount of Olives
Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "This picture is taken from the vest side of the Mount of Olives near a ruin that tradition points out as the place where "when He was come near, He beheld the city, and wept over it. "(Luke19:421) From here one has his finest view of Jerusalem and cannot wonder that from this eminence the disciples looked upon the city with admiration.
Viewed from the Mount of Olives, the city presents an imposing appearance. the wall of the city is thirty-eight feet high, has seven gates and thirty four towers, and is two and one-fifths miles around. The walls ascending sharply from the valley give to the town an appearance of great strength. The town within the walls covers 209 acres, but the city extends outward in several directions, especially to the west and north.
Below this viewpoint, to the left, is the Russian church in their Garden of Gethsemane. Immediately below that and to the right where are seen several tall cypress trees is the Latin Garden of Gethsemane. The road at the extreme right of the picture is the one leading down from the St.Stephens gate where the Nebi Musa Pilgrimage is see. At almost the central point of the picture may be seen the two arches of the golden Gate in the eastern wall of Jerusalem. the open space beyond the wall is the temple area where Solomon;s temple stood. The Platform, raised sixteen feet above the surrounding area, in the center of which is the octagonal Mosque of Omar with its large dome, is clearly noticeable. The high, modern-looking tower seen beyond and a little to the right of the Mosque of Omar belongs to the German Church of the Redeemer, finished in 1898."

Amazing Garden photos
A few nice garden images I found:
Making the Dressing Station neat

Image by National Library of Scotland
Four soldiers are standing on the far away edge of a courtyard created by the walls of two buildings. The furthest away building is bombed-out and so part of the roof and walls are missing as are the windows and doors. The brick gable end of another building is just visible behind this one. The soldiers are not in their full uniforms and one them is balancing a shovel over his shoulder. They are standing looking at a garden in the middle of the courtyard, which possibly they have created. A pretty pattern has been made out of some white material and there is an English flag flying in the middle of it all.
Dressing stations were the first contact an injured soldier had with medical aid. They were fairly basic affairs for immediate aid and so once there the soldier would be assessed and if further medical attention was required then the soldier could be sent to one of the hospitals further behind the lines.

Nurses waiting to see the Queen

Image by National Library of Scotland
Nurses sitting in a garden under a sunshade. According to the photograph’s original caption they are waiting to meet Queen Mary. Their uniforms are all in pristine condition. It is a happy and relaxed scene.
Nursing was one of the few jobs that allowed women to play an active role in the war.

Scene in Feuchy

Image by National Library of Scotland
There are horses tied to the railings of what was once gardens, giving the scene both life and scale. This house looks like it might have been rather grand before the shelling. The cottage in the background appears to have suffered the same fate.
Not only is there a French war memorial at Feuchy, but there is also a British war cemetery. It holds about 212 soldiers who mainly belong to the 15th (Scottish) Division. They were involved in the liberation of the village in 1917. The village was retaken by the Germans in March 1918 before finally being liberated with the Armistice.

The Great Bell of Chion-In Temple, Kyoto, Japan.

Image by Oregon State University Archives
Image Title: The Great Bell of Chion-In Temple, Kyoto, Japan.
Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "You are in the eastern outskirts of Kyoto; the city proper lies behind you are the west. The trees you see between the great beams of the bell tower belong to the temple-garden or park–all Japanese temples have gardens, large or small as the case may be, in which their various buildings are grouped. This bell-tower is separate from the other buildings. It was erected almost three hundred years ago (1613) for a Buddhist monastery up here on the eastern hill. The giant bell of bronze is 108 ft. high and weighs nearly 148,000 pounds; the priests ring it by striking it form the outside with a heavy beam of wood. The beam itself hangs from above by a rope and is pulled to one side, its end striking the great metal flower as it swings back.
There is something marvelous and almost indescribable about the sound that rings out through the air. It fills all the space wit hit sonorous vibrations, deep in tone as the bass of a big church organ and mellow as golden sunshine. Even the most indifferent tourist is impressed by it .The sound lingers, and lingers, and lingers in the air–if you stand quite near, say as near as those women by the railing, you can distinguish a low musical hum five minutes after the bell was struck.
The people you see here are Kyoto residents, Buddhist believers of the middle class. The men’s head-gear shows the unpicturesque effect of contact with European customs, but the women are absolutely Japanese from the glossy waves of their soft, dark hair to the clumsy wooden elogs strapped on their little feet. The big, flat loops in which their sashes (obi) are tied are rigidly prescribed by Japanese canons of elegant propriety."
